Listeriosis
Listeria is bacteria that are found all around us. More specifically, listeria monocytogenes can cause an illness that is initiated at the food level. It is especially dangerous for pregnant women to contract these bacteria. Infections that occur during pregnancy may lead to miscarriages or serious illness in newborns. In order to avoid listeria, you must avoid consumption of these foods:
- raw milk
- unpasteurized milk
- unpasteurized cheeses like soft-ripened types
- unpasteurized ice cream
- raw vegetables
- raw meat sausages
- raw smoked fish
The symptoms of listeria are:
- fever
- fatigue
- nausea and vomiting
- diarrhoea
In order to avoid listeria, make sure that you cook all food thoroughly. Wash all vegetables well before eating them. Make sure that your uncooked meats are separate from vegetables. Avoid raw and unpasteurized milk products. Wash hands, knives and cutting boards after handling uncooked foods. If you suspect that you have listeria, contact your doctor immediately for treatment.
