Obstetric cholestasis (severe itching)
Intense itching during the last trimester of pregnancy may be an indicator of a much larger problem. It is called cholestasis. It is the result of an abnormal flow of bile that goes into the intestine from the liver. When there are increased levels of bile in your blood, you may also have increased bilirubin levels. This may appear as jaundice, just as it does in newborns. Symptoms of cholestasis are:
- severe itching
- yellowing of the skin
- yellowing of the eyeballs
The severe itching usually ends within four weeks of delivery. It doesn’t cause permanent liver damage. This can be an extremely difficult disorder and if you believe that you have it, report it to your doctor immediately.
