Whooping cough
The first signs of whooping cough are an ordinary sounding cough which may be accompanied by a runny nose. Your child may seem slightly off color and the whole phase may drag on for several days. The cough may then worsen and the child makes a sound that actually is a “whoop” sound. The doctor may give antibiotics which are effective in modifying the disease if they are given early enough. What you can do is:
- Nurse her continuously
- Keep her quiet
- Give small drinks and things to eat immediately after a coughing fit
Even though antibiotics can treat the disease, it doesn’t cure it. Recovery time can last for many weeks and even then, they can still be contagious so they should stay away from other children and babies.
Warts and Verrucae
Warts are growths on the skin caused by viruses. Most types disappear on their own. You only need to treat them if they are causing pain or discomfort. Warts are not cancerous and are relatively harmless. A wart can appear as a small, fleshy, grainy bump or rough to the touch. Warts are spread through contact with the human papillomavirus. That means that you have to have direct contact with someone who has it. If you believe that you or your child’s warts are spreading, contact your doctor for advice.
