Top 10 Tips for Breast Feeding

Career and vain women have shied away from breastfeeding their babies because of misconceptions about the possible effects of breastfeeding on their careers and even the size of their breasts.  However, breastfeeding you child even for a limited period is one way to bond with your baby and to keep your baby healthy.

Here are ten tips on breastfeeding that may be very practical for working as well as fulltime mothers as well.

1. Read about breastfeeding while still pregnant.  Reading books and magazines about breastfeeding will help any pregnant woman realize the value of breastfeeding not only to her health but most importantly to her baby’s health.  Most women fail to breastfeed their babies because of ignorance and failure to turn this ignorance into knowledge.

2. Women should discuss their plans to breastfeed their baby with their husbands or the fathers of their babies.  Breastfeeding may be a decision that can be made by a woman alone.  However talking to your mate about your plans to breastfeed your baby will help you get the necessary support later on.

3. If at first you don’t succeed then try and try again!  Some babies are shy to breastfeed.  Some babies have not yet gotten used to the breasts of their mothers and have not yet developed that bond with their mothers.  If a baby rejects your breasts at first then do try and try again because a hungry baby will have no choice but to breastfeed.

4. Never give in to the temptation of giving formula to your baby.  A mother who takes pity on a baby who refuses to breastfeed can easily be swayed into giving in to what a baby wants and then give her baby a bottle.  Both the baby and the mother can get used to the ease with which formula can be given thereby discouraging breastfeeding.

5. Avoid buying formula and stocking them at home.  Some women want to have everything at hand so they buy formula in case their babies do not want their milk.  Babies are not yet aware of any kind of milk so giving them mother’s milk through breastfeeding will not really be an issue.  Having a stand-by formula at home will just be a good temptation.

6. Nurse your baby when he demands to be nursed.  Babies are not born on an equal footing and some may nurse more frequently than others.  Breastfeeding mothers should not dictate the nursing schedule of their babies.  Rather, they should adjust to the time when their babies want to be fed.

7. Avoid in-laws and other people whom you do not like when breastfeeding.  Some women experience post-partum depression.  Some of these women already have brewing or even an already ongoing conflict with their in-laws or other people.  If this is the case, contact with these people should be avoided to keep breast milk flowing free for your baby.  I have encountered many instances when mothers failed to give constant supply of milk to their babies for a long period because their constant battle with interfering and insufferable in-0laws have left them literally dry.

8. Make use of your pregnancy and other leaves.  It is best to postpone returning to work immediately after giving birth to encourage mother and child to bond and to establish a nursing routine.  Mothers should make their babies a priority especially if they plan to breastfeed their babies.

9. Make use of pumps if you have to leave your baby.  Working mothers who have to go back to work as soon as their babies are settled can still breastfeed.  They should avail of breast pumps and store breastmilk in bottles for their babies.  It may be different from actual nursing from the mother’s breasts but at least your baby is getting your milk and not formula.

10. Eat the right diet.  Plenty of soup and fresh fruits will keep the milk coming for your baby.  Chicken soup with maringa tree or what they call malungay in Asia is said to be good for breastfeeding mothers.  If you cannot get the fresh leaves there are maringa capsules already available in the market.

Breastfeeding is a choice that can only be arrived at if a woman is well-informed of her choices and of the effects of her choices.  There are however women who can not really breastfeed their babies for a long time.  They should not worry at all but make sure that their babies get that collostrum which is released from the mother’s breast a few hours or days after giving birth.
