Top 10 Tips for Handling Twins

Having a child can be too much work for anyone much more for working mothers.  However, having twins is just like having twice the load required in caring for a single baby.

While taking care of twins can be difficult it is however no different from taking care of a single baby.  The only difference is that you now have not one, but two babies to take care of.  Here are tips to help you maximize your time and skills in caring for twins.

1. Keep yourself healthy.  The best thing you can do for your twins is to keep a healthy body because you will need it to help grow stronger and healthier.  A mother who has twins to take care of should have great stamina or else she would not last one day just taking care of one baby, how much more if she has to take of one more?

2. Get a reliable caregiver.  While it would be ideal for a mother to take care of her twins you must accept the reality that you only have two arms and you cannot use both arms to cradle two babies all at one time.  Getting a licensed caregiver will help you take care of your twins better and will give you an opportunity to enjoy them.

3. Take a longer leave of absence from work or if possible, leave work altogether even for a few months or even a year.  This may be a big sacrifice for a mother who is also a career woman.  However, taking care of twins is no joke and you have to take advantage of all the support that is available.  You cannot handle two babies at the same no matter how you try.  Having a caregiver does not mean you will no longer take care of your baby directly but at least you have someone to help you with one baby if you need to nurse the other one.

4. Always get an extra pair of anything.  Having twins usually means having the same apparel or kid stuff for them not necessarily because you prefer it fashion wise but because it is more practical to buy more of the same kind rather than choose two different items.  Shopping for the same diaper, milk bottles, stroller can save you time plus it does look fashionable for twins.

5. Buy double strollers that can be used as car seats also.  Buying one stroller that can accommodate two babies will be very ideal for your twins.  It can save you money and will give you a chance to enjoy both of them at the same time.  Can you imagine yourself pushing two strollers?  A double stroller is not only practical but will also be less expensive than buying two strollers.  Plus, they can also be used as car seats for your babies!

6. Do not buy two toys for each kind because your twins will most likely share a toy between them.   Buying different toys for them will help them learn the value of sharing at an early age.  You may spend more for toys but come to think of it, you will actually be saving more because twins can have one swing, slide and other toys which they can share.

7. Feed you twins simultaneously.  Not all at once except if you can use both breasts at open time for feeding.  If a baby wakes up to feed then do not wait for the other one to wake up before feeding him because you will lose sleep.  The best thing to do is to feed the baby who wakes up first and then wake the other one for feeding so that they are both full and you can get a little sleep.

8. Keep important information and items handy.  If you have to take care of your twins by yourself then you better place all things that you may require in one place where you can easily get them once needed.  Save the number of your doctor in your Mobile and paste it in conspicuous places in the house especially the area where you and your twins will mostly likely congregate or stay during the day.

9. Fathers should pitch in too.  Taking care of twins can be very demanding and your wife needs all the help she can get from you.  Take the time to feed one or both babies when they are already eating solids before going out of the house or when you arrive after office hours.  This would allow your wife to take care of other things that have been pending for sometime.

10. Balance the attention you give each child.  No use playing favorites because you will end up the loser in the end.  Twins should be given the same attention or at least almost the same kind of attention.  One baby may be more demanding of your time and attention especially if he is sick but make up for it by showing the other baby love and affection.

Rearing twins is definitely not a walk in the park and you have to practice juggling skills to be able to respond to the needs of your twins.  While you can never be a perfect mother to your twins there is always a chance to improve as you go along.
