Top 10 Tips for Home Births

Some people that giving birth is supposed to be a normal and natural process that does not require the interference of medical doctors.  Most women who live in rural areas have given birth to their children right in their own homes without medical care.

But how safe can home births be?  Is it recommended for all people and for all times?  There are a lot of arguments for and against about home births but a pregnant woman should choose the type of birth she wants subject of course to safety and health concerns.

Here are a few tips for mothers who want to deliver their baby the natural way in the privacy of their homes.

1. Check the prevailing laws on home birth.  Women residing in the UK used to have a legal right to choose the home birth method but this system has changed.  While women are still allowed to choose home birthing the authority however no longer has a legal obligation to make the services of a doctor or even a midwife available upon the request of the woman.  You may think that home birth is appropriate for you but you must also consider the situation you would be in considering the applicable laws.

2. Choose a midwife ahead of time.  If you are planning for a home birth then you have to be prepared by choosing and contacting a midwife ahead of time.  Midwives can provide the necessary care for a woman who has chosen home birth so their availability during the time when the woman is expected to give birth should be checked and booked.  You can choose from the list of midwives in a local hospital or even from a list of independent midwives.

3. Get as much information about home birth.  If you are planning to give birth at home but you are not so sure about the process and its consequences on your health as well as the health of your baby then you better get as much information on home birth.  Talk with other women who have experienced home birthing before.  You can also talk to midwives who can offer you a good insight on the pros and cons of home birth.

4. Talk to home birth support groups if you are having problems with home birth.  If you are experiencing problems related to home birth like difficulty in booking a midwife or unavailability of some midwives please contact your local home birth organizations as they will be able to offer advice and support.  There are cases when women who call the hospitals and request for midwives for home birthing when they are already about to give birth are turned down allegedly because of lack of available midwife.  If you are really bent on a home birth then do not give in to bullying and insist that you do not wish to be transferred to a medical facility but that you require a midwife immediately.

5. Have someone not related to you who can insist that you be sent a midwife.  It is logical to have another person with you at the time when you are expected to give birth, preferably someone who has had a home birth herself or who has extensive home birthing experience.  This person can help you make repeated calls to hospitals requesting for a midwife.  She should be someone who is insistent and one who will not accept no for an answer when told that there are no available midwives for you.

6. Get regular pre natal check ups to make sure that your pregnancy is normal and uncomplicated.  Of course no one can make sure how labour or delivery will turn out.  In any case, you should make sure that you have a normal pregnancy with lesser percentage of complication especially if you are planning on a home birth.  Home birth has been recommended even by experts provided that the woman is not suffering from health problems or pregnancy-related problems.

7. Be prepared for any emergency.   You should always pray for a safe home birth and back that up by having an experienced midwife at home.  However one could not predict how your delivery will go so it is better to be prepared with your options in case something goes wrong.  It is best to talk with your husband or your family so they will be informed of your options and which options you are willing to take in case of emergency.

8. Make sure the midwife is capable, well-trained and can bring along emergency equipment or kits for your home birth.  You may be giving birth at home but you should choose a midwife who is well prepared for any emergency.  Interview the midwife you have chosen until you are so confident that she will be able to handle your home birth and any complication that may come up.

9. Get an ultrasound before you give birth at home.  It s a very good idea to go to a hospital and get an ultrasound to make sure that the baby is in the right position and is in good health.  This will avoid complications and can help you achieve a successful home birth.

10. Check if your insurance will cover home birth.  If you plan to give birth at home then better talk to your insurance company if this type of birth is covered under your policy.  It is important to know this so you would be able to prepare for your home birth financially.

Some people may think that home birthing is risky.  But all pregnancies and deliveries carry a certain percentage of risk.  Whatever type of delivery you choose you would be better off preparing for any eventuality.
