Top 10 Tips for Labour Day
Labour Day may have been called as such not in honour of workers but in respect to the thousands if not millions of women all over the world who have experienced getting into labour. For those who are not so familiar with the term, labour is that stage all pregnant women have to go through before they give birth to their babies.

A pregnant woman will always welcome the thought of finally giving birth to her child.  However, the thought of labour can just as easily send any pregnant woman in a panic because of the pain and difficulty that comes with labour.  Except for a few who give birth like cats and who do not experience any labour pains, most pregnant women would want to skip this part if only it is possible.

But since labour could not be avoided even if you give birth by caesarean method then here are some tips to help pregnant women survive labour.

1. Keep yourself healthy and fit.  A healthy pregnant woman would have more strength during labour compared to someone who is not as fit or as healthy.  A pregnant woman requires all the emotional and physical strength she can muster if she is to survive labour in one piece.

2. Watch your weight! Being overweight when you are pregnant will make labour more difficult because of the possible complications that may arise.  Every pregnant woman should watch her food intake to make sure she does not gain so much weight during her pregnancy.

3. Read up on books about pregnancy, labour and giving birth.  The experiences of other women can give you an insight on how to go through labour without feeling so stressed out.  Reading can give you an idea of what other women have done in the past to lessen pre-labour jitters and what they did to make labour as easy as possible for them.

4. Plan ahead.  Talk to your husband and OB gynaecologist and discuss the options you can take if you are faced with certain unforeseen circumstances during labour.  Will you get epidural as a last resort or do you want to get epidural but in minimal dosage only?  These things are best discussed and decided upon ahead of time to make labour less stressful for you.

5. Visit the delivery room and familiarize yourself with the room as well as the hospital where you are scheduled to give birth.  Familiarizing yourself with your birthing facilities will help make the hospital ore friendly and no longer that strange place.  This can help you relax and lessen your fear about going to labour.

6. Know the basic hospital policies.  Some hospitals allow husbands to go with their wives to the delivery room to assist her.  Others forbid this and do not even allow visitors to the delivery room.  Some do not allow cell phones and other items.  Make sure you know about their policies ahead of time so you can choose another place if you are not amenable to their rules.

7. Bring a CD and earplugs or even your favourite book during labour.  Some women have to wait for hours before they have contractions.  Some may have c contracted for one or two centimetres but wait a long time for their contractions to move.  While you will feel less pain walking around the delivery room you can also pass the time listening to the music of your choice while waiting for that final moment.  You can even listen to rock music on your earphones while waiting for baby to arrive.

8. Avoid eating too much immediately before and during labour. You do not want to pass out waste material while waiting for contractions to achieve dull dilation.  You also do not want this to happen while pushing your child out of your womb in the delivery room.  Trust me; the last thing you can think of when already in labour is food.

9. Take birthing and breathing lessons.  You may not be able to give birth without asking for the wonders of medicine but you can benefit from taking Lamaze classes if only to learn breathing techniques.  Breathing can lessen labour pains and can help you concentrate on other things instead of focusing on the pains caused by labour.

10. Make sure your bag has been packed with all the necessary items for you and your baby inside.  Pack your bag as early as a month before your actual expected date to lessen the pressure on you.  When you actually have contractions already and you decide to go to the hospital then you can just get your bag and walk away without worrying if you have everything inside.

Labour Day is a most-awaited day for mothers to be because they will finally be able to see their little angels after waiting for nine months.  While Labour Day has become synonymous with pain and difficulty, these discomforts can be lessened if you have prepared properly.
