Top 10 Tips for New Fathers

Fatherhood can be frightening to most men.  It is a totally different experience and can be humanizing for men who have difficulty expressing their feelings in any given situation.

New fathers can look forward to lesser nights out with the boys and more time for domesticity.  This can be fun and exciting for any man looking forward to changes in his life once the baby comes.  But new fathers have to prepare for the challenges of fatherhood.  So here goes.

1. Spend time with your pregnant wives.  The more time you spend with your pregnant wives the more you will be able to understand what she is going through.  It is difficult to be pregnant and trust me, you would not be able to survive a minute in that condition so be more understanding and patient with your pregnant wives.

2. Never miss the delivery!  You may be a busy father but never miss the birth of your child.  There is no feeling that can compare to seeing your child when he is born.  If the hospital allows it then you can even share the birthing experience by going with your wife in the delivery room.

3. Take the time to be a hands-on father.  Take turns in changing the baby’s diaper.  Much better if you an d your wife can change the diaper together as it would be bonding time not only for the two of you but for baby himself.  It would be a priceless experience to be able to get the diapering process right without some pee getting in your face.

4. Talk to your baby.  New fathers seldom spend time with their babies perhaps because they have to be out of the house most of the time for work.  Make up for los time by talking to your baby as this will allow him to recognize your voice and bond with you.  Don’t be shy.  You may be a man but you are allowed to coo to your baby.

5. Massage your baby.  New fathers should try to massage their babies lightly. Rubbing the baby’s back and legs can be good for him as the baby will learn to relax.  It is also a good exercise of gentleness among new fathers.

6. Learn to bathe your baby.  New fathers would never touch a newborn baby especially when it’s time to give him a bath.  However, babies grow fast and after a month or two new fathers can try their hands bathing their babies who may no longer look frail as they were when they were still a week old.

7. Read to your baby.  Teach your baby to appreciate stories and fairy tales.  It is a good way of entertaining and educating your baby at an early age.  Reading to your child while they are still babies can help them develop love for reading and for books.

8. Always be prepared with thermometers and suppositories.  Babies will always be susceptible to getting fevers so it will be ideal if new fathers can have their thermometers ready to get their child’s temperature.  Being prepared with a suppository can help lessen a very high temperature in no time at all and can help keep mothers from worrying.

9. Help your wife in house work whenever possible.  Always appreciate your wives for staying at home and taking care of you and the baby.  This is not an easy task and it could get very boring and irritating when one is left inside the four walls of the home for a long period of time. So always pitch in with household chores whenever you can.

10. Keep the memories forever not only in your hearts but in photographs as well. Buy a reliable camera and take photos of your baby at every opportunity.  You will appreciate this when your baby has grown a year old and you still have photos of him when he was still in the process of crawling, sitting down or raising himself up!

Being a new father can be wonderful if you are prepared for most of the things that fathers should do.  But the best advice to give new fathers is to always express what you feel to tour baby and never suppress your emotions.  Babies will respond to new fathers the way they are treating them so treat your babies with love.
