Top 10 Tips for Newborn Babies

A newborn baby is always a welcome and an exciting addition to every family.   Babies are cute and cuddle and they can bring joy to anyone.  It is amazing how newborn babies can touch lives even before they learn to speak and express their feelings.

But while newborn babies give joy to every family they can also cause a lot of worries, sleepless nights and guilty feelings because they can easily cry without anyone knowing why.  Knowing the exact reason why a newborn baby I crying can be a wild goose chase so consider these tips if you have a newborn baby in the house.

1. Make sure the newborn baby gets clean bill of health from his paediatrician before bringing him home. Parents need not worry about the constant crying of a newborn baby if he has been declared healthy by his doctor.  There are surely some small discomforts that are causing those baby cries so find the reason and rest assured that he is in no way suffering from a major health problem.

2. Subject your newly born baby to newborn screening.  This recent development in baby healthcare can be advantageous especially if certain diseases run in the family.  Having the newborn baby brought for newborn screening will help the parents take better care of the baby since they already know what possible disorders he may be carrying in his genes even if it has not manifested yet.  Some states already require hospitals to conduct mandatory newborn screening on every newborn baby.

3. Newborn babies have changing sleeping patterns.  With this knowledge parents no longer have to wonder why their newborn baby is sleeping two hours straight for a week and then four hours straight the next week.  The sleeping pattern of a newborn baby is erratic and the mother or whoever takes care of the baby should adjust to his sleeping hours.

4. Keep the nursery or baby room always fresh and free from irritants.  It is better to install centralized air cleaners in the house or if this is not feasible then even just inside the baby room.  This will protect the baby from inhaling allergens that may cause him to develop asthma or other illnesses later on.

5. Breastfeed your baby.  Breastfeeding is still the best way to nurse a baby as it is both cost effective and can keep the baby free from illnesses.  It is ideal to breastfeed the baby up to a year but if this is not possible then try to breastfeed the baby the soonest possible time after birth.  This will enable him to take in colostrum which is a fluid that comes out from the mammary gland of the mother during the first three days after giving birth.  Doctors say that colostrum provide newborn babies with substances that will help boost his immune system.

6. Feed the newborn baby frequently.  Newborn babies feed in small amounts so they require frequent feedings.  It is best to take note of the times or the number of hours before the next feeding time to prevent the baby from getting hungry and crying himself out.  Some mothers just feed the baby when they are already hungry and manifest this hunger by crying.  It is good practice to feed the baby even before he gets hungry and cries out.

7. Check baby’s diapers.  Nothing can be more uncomfortable for a baby than a wet diaper.  A mother can always estimate when the diaper is already full.  Newborn babies can wet their diapers frequently and it is good practice to always change the diapers and not wait for it to get soak.

8. Use petroleum jelly on baby skin before putting on a fresh diaper.  That is, after you have washed the baby’s private parts and the other body parts exposed to urine with water and a ph- balanced soap.  Some mothers use wet wipes and then put on petroleum jelly on their baby’s skin to prevent blisters and diaper rashes.

9. Sing to your baby.  A mother should already sing to her baby even before he is born.  Singing while your baby is still in the womb can soothe him.  A lullaby or classical music can lull your baby to sleep and can develop his intelligence and ability to appreciate music.

10. Consider sleeping with your baby on your side.  Some experts disagree with this but more babies die of asphyxiation because they are left in their own cribs.  Mothers who sleep with their babies beside them can easily wake up and see if something is wrong with the baby.

A newborn baby is a joy to behold especially if you know how to take care of him.  Give a newborn baby what he wants and requires like milk, fresh diapers and comfortable clothing and you will never have a cry-baby in your arms. Well, mot much of a crying baby that is.
