Top 10 Tips for Teething

It is funny how a lot of false beliefs have been circulating throughout the ages about how babies would definitely experience lose bowels or get very high fever when they are teething.   These are just mother’s tales and are not backed by medical evidence,

Teething is that period when babies start to grow their teeth and this can be very uncomfortable for them.  Some babies however take teething in stride and still behave the way they used to be even if they do feel some of the discomforts of teething.  While a mother could not do much to keep her baby from feeling such pain she can however make things easier and less painful for her baby through the following:

1. Watch out for those white sprouts on baby’s gums.  Some babies do not really show a lot of evidence that they are already teething.  Mothers should watch out for those white growths in baby’s gums now and then as she may already be growing her first tooth without you knowing it.

2. Look for other telltale signs.  Babies who used to love drinking milk may lose interest in their bottles when they are teething.  If he also starts to lose interest in food then this may be a sign that something is bothering him and it might be caused by teething pains.

3. Take advantage of teething rings.  Teething rings, the softer ones, are a lifesaver especially when a baby has no choice but to grit her gums because of the discomforts of teething.  Get at least a pair of teething rings and place them in the refrigerator so they will be cool when you give them to your baby.  Having one more teething rings in the refrigerator will make sure that baby will always have a spare one.  Cold teething rings will help alleviate the pain of teething.

4. Make the baby laugh if she refuses to let you hold her gums.  Some babies refuse to have another person hold their gums especially when they are already teething.  So how can you look at the telltale signs of teething like white growths in the gums when your baby would not allow you to hold his gums?  The best thing to do which always works is to get the baby to laugh and open his mouth wide.  Do this in the guise of a game so he will cooperate with you.

5. Count your baby’s teeth!  Watch out for the first set to arrive which is usually the incisors consisting of four front teeth.  The two lower incisors will usually appear first before the upper incisors.  Watch out for the molars which usually appear when the baby is about a year old.  However, some babies develop their teeth early.

6. Diarrhea is not part and parcel of teething.  Your baby is susceptible to getting Diarrhoea at anytime because of unclean hands or unclean food that gets into his mouth.  Always keep your baby’s hands clean to avoid this disease before, during and even after the teething process.

7. Hug and cuddle your baby when he is teething.  Some babies may to be as fussy as others when they are teething but hugging lulling them will take their mind off the discomfort of teething.

8. Get your doctor’s advice.  If your baby experiences very painful teething forcing him to cry out endlessly then get the advise of your paediatrician as he may b able to prescribe ointments or other medical remedies to lessen the pain of teething,

9. Your baby is strong and resilient enough to survive teething.  Most parents feel sorry for their baby when they feel so much pain during teething.  However, babies are very resilient and they forget the whole painful process after a few days and go back to their normal, playful selves.

10. Avoid using teething gels.  Some mothers who could not bear seeing their babies in pain apply teething gel the moment they see signs of teething.  Teething gels should be avoided because they may contain some substances harmful to the baby.

Always show extra attention to your baby when he is teething.  Teething will always be a painful process although some babies feel pain in different levels.  Just be extra patient with your baby and you will both survive the teething stage.
